Canyon Song I

24”Hx18”W

I wanted to create a quilt to uplift the spirits of those viewing my piece.

In February 2019, I learned my brother Dan had throat and neck cancer which required surgery.  I spent the summer taking him to a blur of appointments and treatments, until it was time for a PET Scan in the fall.  The scan results showed a “shadow” on his throat, but overall was termed very successful.  I saw my brother’s eyes light up.  The words “overall successful” were all he heard, so I held my questions to myself.  As always, I supported him.  His spirit had returned once again.  After such an eventful summer, my husband and I took a trip to Yellowstone National Park to get away and hopefully breathe new life into my skeptical self.  The canyon walls rippled with color, and the wind whips through them with song.  The colors I chose for my quilt, represent the colors of the canyon but also the bright green lasers and the black, the dark rooms where my brother had his radiation.   As I dyed my silk, I felt a release of tension and heard the songs of the canyon winds again.  This relief was what I was looking for and needed, after a long summer of grief.  It is now March 2020.  My brother has a follow-up scan in April.  I pray the God’s of the Canyon Song is with him and continues to uplift him with favorable results. Canyon Song has been my backyard escape.  May you or anyone you know going through a similar experience find solace in my piece.  Thank you for your time.
