MMIW - Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women
43”Hx34.5”W
I recently learned about the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women movement. Murder is the third leading cause of death for Native women, and little is reported. This is startling because Native people only make up 2% of the US overall population.
A red hand over the mouth has become the symbol of the MMIW movement. It represents all the missing sisters whose voices are not heard, and for the silence amid this crisis.
February 14 is MMIW National Day of Action and Awareness. May 5 is the official MMIW Day, Wear Red Day and is also known for “No More Stolen Sisters”.
My hope is to bring awareness to MMIW by creating this traveling art quilt. Go to Nativehope.org for information.
